Aims and Objectives
This unit will analyse a selection of Australian media industry sectors and current and long-standing media public policy issues, including competition, ownership and control; censorship and classification; measurement of media use; privacy and security; and public and community media institutions. The unit improves students’ ability to participate effectively in media activities and industries as consumers, producers, employees and owners and to provide students with conceptual and practical tools for thinking about future trends and possibilities in media industries.
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of students’ media use and how it compares with broader trends in Australia and overseas through completion of a media usage survey
2. Prepare and deliver an oral presentation that critically examines selected Australian media industries or issues
3. Research, describe and comment on commercial, social and cultural issues facing selected Australian media industries through weekly online posts
4. Undertake research that critically analyses selected Australian media industries and/or issues
